About our school

Past and present

Secondary Construction Vocational School in Opava was founded in 1949. As the name suggests, it focuses on the education of students who find employment in construction and related fields after graduation. It is the oldest and the only facility of its kind in the Opava region with a long tradition and reputation even outside the district. School provides some unique vocational training branches for the entire region of North Moravia and Silesia (e.g. field roofer). The quality of our students undoubtedly confirms a regular position at the forefront of vocational skills competitions. For example, in the school year 2013/14, our students from several branches, particularly joiners, bricklayers, carpenters, roofers and tinsmiths won their Moravian regional rounds and advanced to national and international finals.

In its early days, the school was part of the former Municipal Building Company, the predecessor of the District Construction Company (Czech abbr. OSP) in Opava. Since 1967 it has been located in the buildings on the 22 B. Nemcova Road in Opava, which are owned by Regional Authority of the Moravian-Silesian Region. On 1st July 1991 the school became a separate legal entity and after the privatization of the District Construction Company (OSP) the vocational training has been mostly provided in its own buildings. Our school has well-equipped specialized classrooms for education and practical training in all fields that are taught. The building on the B. Nemcova Rd serves the theoretical part of the education and practical training for the branch Bricklayer. It also offers all-day internet access for students as well as teachers and visitors. Timber fields have job specific training on Jánská Rd in a newly built training centre opened in 2003. An workshop complex on Kylešovská Rd, rebuilt in the years 2006 – 2007, is used for the branches Electrician, Plumber, Roofer, Tinsmith and Mechanic for Plumbing and Electrical Equipment

Very important parts of our school are the school cafeteria with the capacity of 400 meals and the dormitory with 120 beds. Transport service to Opava is provided from Hlučín, Vítkov, Ostrava etc. This is the reason that students can come to the school from remote locations. And those students can choose to stay here or commute every day.

An individual approach to students and their skills’ further development is obvious. Cooperation with social partners and the school educational programme for every vocational training branch ensures the connection with professional life. Our graduates are asked by businessmen to work with both, the classic and the modern technologies. For example they participated on the reconstruction of the National Theatre in Prague and more recently on the reconstruction of the roof of St. Barbara Church in Kutna Hora.
